Judith and her dummy

15 Sep

I find this painting to be amusing for a strange reason: the position of Holofernes’ severed head at the end of Judith’s voluminuous sleeve gives the impression that he is a ventriloquist’s dummy.

Giacomo Cavedone, Judith with the Head of Holofernes, 1608, Oil on canvas, 112 x 115 cm, Banca Popolare dell’Emilia Romagna, Modena, Italy

Judith: Hey Holofernes. What did the dummy say to the bartender when he ask “Howya doin’?”

Holferenes:  I feel I little stiff.

Judith:   No, that’s what she said.

ba-dum ching.
