Judith and the Ancient Maid

17 Sep

I will preface this by stating:  I am not prejudiced against older people.

Gerard Seghers, “Judith with the Head of Holofernes,” 1613-1620, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica/Galleria Corsini, Rome, Italy

I used to study gerontology and I plan to be an older person one day,  But daang, this maid is really old. Which presents three problems from what I can see:

a)  How the heck is she going to hold down a struggling Assyrian General while Judith chops off his head?  and …
b)  How is she going to carry a bag with his big Assyrian General noggin?  and …
c) (spoiler alert) How is she going to outlive Judith for another 90 years? She will have to be about 180 years old when Judith finally gives her freedom.

Which reminds me:  if Judith is so grateful, how come the maid has to wait for Judith to kick off on order to get her gift of appreciation?
