Judith’s existence is questioned

09 Oct

Let me explain how this works and how I cannot complete the discussion of this Judith the way I want.  Also known as LMMAE (Let Me Make An Excuse ).

Nicolas Regnier, “Judith with the head of Holofernes,” (c.1600-60), Oil on canvas, 120 x174 cm, auctioned by Christie’s 11/19/1990 (Lot 99 )

First there is the issue: The Way I Want.  For each of these artworks, I want to be able to describe:

  • full name of the artist
  • name of the artwork
  • date the artwork was completed
  • medium
  • dimensions
  • current location

Which brings me to the second issue: From Whence These Came.

  • Google images, which led me to —
  • Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, but if that didn’t work —
  • websites for art reproductions
  • websites for art valuation
  • websites for auction houses
  • websites for museums
  • websites for individual artists
  • blogs
  • flickr and picasa

In terms of quality of information, the order on which I rely is:

  • museums (accurate and complete)
  • auction houses (accurate and mostly complete)
  • Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons (mostly accurate and mostly complete)
  • individual artists (mostly accurate but not always complete)
  • art valuation (mostly accurate but often a fee for complete information)
  • art reproduction (mostly accurate but rarely complete)
  • flickr and picasa (mostly accurate but rarely complete)
  • blogs (untrustworthy for accuracy and completeness)

So what happened here and how the existence of Judith was questioned:

  • found a single picture on Google images, which led me to —
  • a website for art valuation that had incomplete information and required a fee

The only thing I know about this Judith is … her boob fell out and someone is probably enjoying that in their private collection.

update: I found her!  Some backwards sleuthing produced an auction house which produced an auction date and dimensions.  She really does exist … somewhere … with her boob still hanging out..
