Judith drags the sword along

13 Nov

This time around, Judith and the maid put the head in a bag – but they forgot to leave behind the enormous incriminating fauchion.

Franz von Rohden, “Judith,” 1845, Oil on canvas, 99 x 136 cm, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany

This is a bold Judith.   Standing tall, striding long, looking ahead.   Probably having to reassure the maid – who is looking very apprehensive.  Like she might drop the head and run.   Which would probably be a big mistake.

Maybe that is the real reason Judith has the sword.
