Judith, Janet and Justin

02 Dec

This painting confused me for a moment because, unlike all the other depictions of the public display of Holofernes’ head, this is a close-up of Judith with the crowd in the background.

Giovanni Giuseppe dal Sole, “Judith with the head of Holofernes,” 1695, Oil on canvas, 109 x 90 cm, Minneapolis Institute of Arts Italian, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

I must say, poor Judith appears to be in shock.   The slack jaw, the vacant stare, the disheveled clothing.   Why, she does not even notice her bosom has fallen out.   And if they are broadcasting this show on CBS, she could easily end up like Janet Jackson.

Not that grinding with Justin Timberlake is a bad thing.
