Judith borrows some clothes

13 Feb

Jan Salomonsz de Bray, “Judith Delivering the Head of Holofernes,” 1636, Oil on panel, 89 x 71 cm, Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain

De Bray was well-known for the portrait historié or historicized portrait – portraying contemporary individuals as figures from the Bible, mythology, or ancient history and literature.   The woman depicted as Judith in this work is unknown.   However, she appears to be very young and earnest And hopeful that her gift to the city will be worth the effort.

I just hope she did not mind being portrayed with a rag in her hair, wearing grandma’s bedspread.
