Judith plays with fire

09 May

Angela Steel, “Judith with the Head of Holofernes,” 2007, etched painted leaded glass, 540 x 759 in,

Explains the artist Angela Stone:

Judith’s village was plundered by an enemy army. To save it she went into the sleeping commander’s tent and cut off his head. I have shown her blindfolded to symbolise the blind eye she has to turn to morality.

But what about the white and red balloons by her head?   When enlarged, clearly containing unborn fetuses.  Has Judith somehow been co-opted into an anti-abortion message?
