Judith, Warrior Princess

02 Jul

Nicola Vaccaro, “Judith,” c. 1685-1695, Oil on canvas, 85 x 73 cm, auctioned by Christie’s 12/6/2001 (Lot 320)

Judith reappears here as a Amazonian-Visigoth-Teutonic-Germanic-Celtic-Norse warrior princess (before 700 AD) to rival Xena (1995-2001 AD).  With attitude and a dashing sash and a ravishing fur stole.   I just wonder:  who is the object of her wilting glare?   Best be getting your act together before she makes you her next victim.
