Judith in a hot flash

05 Aug

William S. Schwartz, “Judith,” 1930, Oil on canvas, 36 x 30 in, Papillon Gallery, Los Angeles, California, United States

*Ahem*   When the biographer says “(Schwartz) also scandalized conservative audiences with numerous lithographs of nude women,”  he must have been referring to this painting.  Because it is clearly a departure from the Regionalist portrayals of the American countryside and small-towns that he painted as a Federal Art Project artist during the Great Depression.  No, this is much closer to the European surrealism that influenced Schwartz to paint dreamy, symbolist works and abstractions.

Of course, we have seen so many nude Judith’s over the past year that one more is hardly scandalous.  Although this may be the first painting in which there is evidence that Judith was a natural redhead.

Ok, I literally laughed out loud! I subscribe to your blog out of interest in Judith ( who I never knew existed before a month ago). Anyway, you are very funny and this post totally deserved a comment!

I’m glad you enjoyed it! Some days are funnier than others. The story of my life!
