Judith gets a giggle

17 Aug

This is the second set of paintings I have discussed by Pietro Ricchi.  The first was Judith with an enormous pom-pom on her head.  Now we have the influence of (insert trumpets here) Caravaggio – and a little tickle.

Pietro Ricchi (il Lucchese), “Judith with the head of Holofernes,”17th century, Oil on canvas, 103×114 cm, Castello del Buonconsiglio, Trento, Italy

Pietro Ricchi (il Lucchese), “Judith with the head of Holofernes,” 17th century, Oil on canvas, 83 x 99 cm, Castelvecchio, Verona, Italy

At first, I thought these were the same painting – the second one being a detail.  But no.  Just two very similar compositions, with very similar expressions of delight.  As if Judith and the Maid were sharing a little joke.

I guess Holofernes is the punch line.
