Judith and the doggie bag

06 Sep

(From Doublemint Twins of Judith)

It took me a moment to remember why I grouped these two paintings together.    And then it hit me…

  • Not the flaxen hair or the rosy cheeks
  • Not the fluffy head gear or the ornate jewels
  • Not the surprised expression on Holofernes’ face …

… it is the maid WITH THE BAG IN HER TEETH.

Unknown, Italian school, “Judith with the head of Holofernes,” 18th century, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Chamont, France

Carlo Saraceni, “Judith Presenting the Head of Holofernes,” 1612, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, these two unrelated artists both chose to depict the poor, demeaned maid holding the bag that is going to momentarily contain the bloody head WITH HER TEETH.    Seriously??!!  Who does this?  Unless she is missing an arm or a hand, why is it necessary to place the edge of the bag in her teeth?

Her dentist must be going crazy about now.
