Judith and La Famiglia

Giuseppe Nuvolone (Il Panfilo), “Judith with the head of Holofernes,” Oil on canvas, 204 x 133 cm, auctioned by San Marco d’aste S.p.A. 2/22/2009 (Lot 1), Venice, Italy

Poor Giuseppe.

Giuseppe Nuvolone was the second son of Panfilo Nuvolone (1581–1651) – a prominent Italian painter of the Mannerist period.    His oldest brother, Carlo Francesco Nuvolone, was also a prominent in painter in Lombardy.  So as the younger son, Giuseppe Nuvolone was known as … “also a painter.”

I wonder if this painting had any relation to his affinity for his older brother?
