Judith takes a stand

16 Feb

Hermann Geibel, “Judith with the Head of Holofernes,” 20th century, Bronze, 15 cm, auctioned by Klassische Moderne, Nov 13, 2008 (Lot 543), Munich, Germany

So much going on in this statuette!!

  • First there is Judith’s expression, which … you cannot see.
  • Second is her clothing, that indicates … zero.
  • Then her body language which tells the viewer she is … not laying down.
  • Of course the background gives an indication of … nothing.
  • And finally, Holofernes’ head is … barely visible.

The one thing i can say is:   Judith could be planning a celebratory soccer game (aka football).   I hope the other players don’t mind the awkwardness of playing without uniforms.

    This is a take-off of Donatello’s “David”.
