Judith: Campbell Kids Postcard

10 Mar

To relate to today’s artwork of Judith, I have to accept two things:

  1. Someone would want to send a postcard that depicts Judith decapitating Holofernes
  2. Someone would depict Judith and Holofernes as chubby, cute little children

E. Colombo, “Judith & Holofernes,” 1927, Signed postcard, auction on eBay (item 380376917118)

I wonder if Holofernes failed to serve Campbell’s soup at the banquet and that’s why Judith is so murderous?

Saw the Colombo postcard on eBay today and thought of this blog. And of course, there’s a post about it! Interesting that the eBay seller didn’t seem to know what it represented. In the item description we have – “SUBJECT: Girl in fashion of India approaches sleeping warrior with Sword…doesn’t seem to have good intentions, Leopard Skin Rug, Shield, Tents……”. ‘Doesn’t seem to have good intentions’ is an astute observation.
