Judith has a Current Affair, Part 1

18 Sep

Current Affairs is a bimonthly print magazine of politics and the arts with a left wing bias in topical story selection. It is self-described as “the only publication guaranteed to regularly contain both in-depth domestic policy analysis and pictures of colorful flamingos.” Its stated aims are to be an informative and entertaining independent publication.

And what could be more informative and entertaining with a left wing bias than Judith?

Therefore I share with you “Ranked: 10 Paintings of Judith Beheading Holofernes” by Lyta Gold & Brianna Rennix.

For centuries, “Judith Beheading Holofernes” was a popular subject among European painters who wanted to depict a righteous woman cutting off the head of a brutal man. Before you get too agitated, male readers, please note that #notallmen are getting their heads cut off in the following paintings, just Holofernes. If you identify more with Holofernes than with Judith, that’s definitely something for you to unpack in the privacy of your own head! and not in DMs to us, which we will not read anyway.

With back-and-forth commentary from the two authors, the ranking features 10 depictions of Judith presented with humor and pathos and fashion critiques. What a novel idea!!

So who is included in the ten? In ascending order:

  1. Anonymous
  2. Orazio Gentileschi
  3. Lucas Cranach the Elder
  4. Unknown
  5. Cristofano Allori
  6. Giorgione
  7. Sandro Botticelli
  8. Sandro Botticelli
  9. Caravaggio
  10. (And the winner is) Artemisia Gentileschi

I think all those are laying around here somewhere.
